That oh so elusive Q in Detective! “I missed it by just one” seems to be a statement that goes hand in hand with Detective. The Q rate for Detective across the United States is in the top for lowest pass rates of any element or class AKC Scent Work has to offer. There are reasons why, some of it is K9 and some of it is handler.
Judging many Detective trials and coaching multiple handlers has afforded Tony the opportunity to witness countless Detective searches, many successful and many not so successful. Tony has isolated over 20 skills that are required to be successful in Detective. Tony will not only break down the K9 skills required to be successful in Detective but address trialing strategies and common handler mistakes in this webinar.
This webinar will be packed with information such as:
- the 20 main skills a dog needs to be successful in Detective
- what trends and fads that seem to go countrywide with hide placements
- on the fly assessment of the search area(s)
- ow to use Master Interiors as prep for Detective runs.
Tony will dive into the weeds on how to develop a training plan to prepare for Detective and emphasize how to isolate K9 skills needed and more importantly how to develop those skills (in a systematic way) while keeping motivation high in the dog.
Whether trialing in Detective or hoping to in the future, this webinar will provide extremely useful training information not only for Detective but for handlers competing in multiple Companion Dog Detection Sports organizations. Not only at the higher levels, but working their way through the levels as a bulk of the skills required are universal.

"Wow! Mind blown! So much useful information to help me prepare. Appreciate knowing why teams often fail, how to build success in Detective class by using Master's class to prepare. Also really appreciate all the information, and examples of training problems that can be set up to skill build for both dog and handler.
Alot of great information that I can use to help my students prepare for upper levels. Looking forward to "the 8 tells" webinar. Thank you again! Great webinar!" Jaime F.
"Yes, so much information! I will go back and review it many times. Fawn is on her last two master interior legs for overall masters, and Sadie just got her last master overall. This information is invaluable to our foundations. I will go back and utilize it and the trial training too. Tony comes up with practice solutions to scent work!" Marietta M.
"All of it. Tony really broke down what skills the dog and the handler needs in order to be successful in Detective. We have just gotten our fifth Detective leg and I have used suggestions from Tony to help improve our performance. Two of our legs were gotten under him. I am in awe of the vast amount of knowlege Tony has and learn many new things every time I watch a webinar or talk with him in person. He is genuinely interested in helping teams be successful in achieving their goals." Judith F.
"So sorry I missed the live, I had the wrong date on my calendar. Tony is great!!! First time I have listened or heard of him. He was awesome in explaining how to set up working pooling odor, my downfall. I video and love the way he to watch videos, tape practice, to see the lines. Love the idea of putting 2 events/singles together to decide if his dog is done. Still watching it. Thank you, thank you. I can't say enough!" Karen A.
"Incredible amount of information! Tony broke it down into manageable chunks. He not only shared the scent theory, but also how to set up scenarios to practice each skill. His list of 20 necessary skills is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you Tony and Dianna for providing this learning opportunity." Carrie A.
